About Chennai

Chennai is the capital city of the Indian state, Tamilnadu and one of the four major metropolitan cities of India. Located on the east coast of India, the city has rich cultural heritage, temple architecture and historic importance. The city is popular for its extreme treasure of tourist attractions. Representing the Dravidian Civilization, the interesting city of Chennai upholds the music, drama, dance, architecture, arts and crafts and sculpture etc of India. The Chennai economy has a huge industrial base in technology, cars, manufacturing, hardware and health industry. The revenue and the employment sectors of the city are very advanced.

Chennai is a culturally developed city replete with centres of Carnatic Music and cultural events. The city has a diverse theatre scene and is one of the important centres for Bharata Natyam, a classical dance form that originated in Tamil Nadu and is the oldest dance of India. The month of December, known as the month of "Margazhi" in the traditional Hindu calendar, has also become synonimous as the "music season" and one can be treated to some of the best traditional music and dance in the country.

Apart from the vibrant theatre life scene Chennai also has a popular film industry with numerous studios involved in the making of Tamil, Kannada, Malayalam, Telugu, and Hindi movies which popular all across India.

Lonely Planet named Chennai as one of the top ten cities in the world to visit in 2015. Chennai is ranked as a beta-level city in the Global Cities Index and was ranked the best city in India by India Today in the 2014 annual Indian city survey. National Geographic ranked Chennai's food as second best in the world; it was the only Indian city to feature in the list. Chennai was also named the ninth-best cosmopolitan city in the world by Lonely Planet.
 
In January 2015 the Chennai Metropolitan Area was ranked as the fourth-largest economy in India, with the third-highest GDP per capita. Chennai has been selected as one of the 20 Indian cities to be developed as a smart city under PM Narendra Modi's flagship Smart Cities Mission.

Previously known as Madras, the city was renamed as Chennai in 1996. Replete with airports, railways and diverse means of roadways, the city of Chennai can be accessed from any corner of the world, easily and smoothly.
